Layla is the 2018 British Council Writer in Residence at the Small Wonder Short Story Festival at Charleston and for just one evening we have the opportunity in Brighton to hear new work from this wonderful, up and coming young Muslim writer.
Layla was signed by a literary agent in the US after answering an open call on Twitter for submissions by Muslim writers, to counter President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban in 2017. Her debut novel, The Pact We Made, will be published by Borough Press next spring and will be the first of the novels discovered through the open call to find a publisher.
Layla will be in conversation with local author Sharon Duggal, talking about her unconventional route into publishing and about how a new generation of Arab-Anglophone writers are working to claim their own voice, their own ‘space’, bringing their experiences and truths to a western audience.
She is very keen to make connections with other writers and readers here in the UK so we’re pleased to host this intimate evening of reading, conversation and food. I do hope you can come along.
NUMBERS ARE STRICTLY LIMITED.
Tickets are FREE but TICKETED. Please book your ticket here
If you can’t make this event, Layla will be in residence at Small Wonder 28th – 30th September alongside fantastic authors including Ben Okri, Juno Dawson, Louise Doughty and Neil Bartlett as well as workshops, reading salons and Open Mics. Use code NWS20 when booking for a 20% discount!
