Objects can play a pivotal role in a story’s plotting. But they can also act as inspiration, aide-de-memoire or simply contribute to the convincing detail within a fiction. Next month we’re hosting a creative writing workshop with award-winning author Mick Jackson to explore how objects operate in a text, but also focus on the rewards of close and careful observation – the ability to ‘find the extraordinary in the ordinary’. By studying a variety of extracts and through a number of writing exercises you'll sharpen your perceptions and steer away from the cliched towards the original.
Mick's first novel, The Underground Man, was shortlisted for The Booker Prize. He has since published a further three novels and three collections of stories, all with Faber and Faber. He is a visiting lecturer at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.
The session will be held on Friday 8th March 2024 at the Jubilee Library in Brighton and will run from 10-4pm with an hour for lunch. The venue is wheelchair accessible, near the train station and bus routes and with plenty of options for lunch. Book your place here.

The in-person masterclasses are £50 each while the online workshop is £40. Places are limited to 15 for in-person workshops and 12 online.
