Getting to know who? In our one-day workshop next weekend, we will look at the role of desire, choice and purpose in enabling us to create a cast of believable, three-dimensional characters. By creating a strong through-line for your characters you will enable them to direct the narrative. Let your characters loose in their story. Marrying conflict and authentic character will help you create a powerful story arc.
Through a series of exercises, you will explore various characterisation crafting techniques designed to develop sympathy and interest in your protagonist and create a strong connection with your reader. Characters are not case studies and there are no short cuts to characterisation, so come prepared to dive into dark waters to allow your wise unconscious to contribute meaningful imagery, and be ready for exploration and fun as we work toward layered character development and greater reader engagement.
Your tutor will be Ruth Figgest. Ruth is a novelist and short story writer. She was born in Oxford and grew up in the US. Her short stories have been short listed and commended for the Bridport Prize several times and in 2013 her short story “The Coffin Gate” was broadcast on Radio 4. Magnetism, her debut novel was published by Myriad in 2018. She holds an MA in Creative Writing and Personal Development from the University of Sussex.
The session will be held on Sunday 10th March 2024 at the Jubilee Library in Brighton and will run from 11-5pm with an hour for lunch. The venue is wheelchair accessible, near the train station and bus routes and with plenty of options for lunch. Book your ticket here.
